About Our Opportunity


The Program Administration Officer 1-2 – Program Coordinator (Teacher Certification Evaluator) is responsible for assessing, evaluating, and determining certification eligibility. The Teacher Certification Evaluator will provide services to all client requests and work collaboratively with other team members when analyzing applications for certification.  


This position will initially report to the Registrar/Director Teacher Certification.

Primary Accountabilities


The Program Administration Officer 1-2 – Program Coordinator (Teacher Certification Evaluator) supports processes associated teacher certification and has the following responsibilities:

  • Apply the Teacher Certification Regulations, under the Education Act, to the evaluation of applications for teacher certification from a variety of education programs
  • Conduct research to inform certification decision-making and provide the Assistant Registrar with a summary
  • Participate in the development of a database consisting of world-wide accreditation information
  • Review general application information and assesses academic credentials from universities world-wide
  • Evaluate the comparative value of academic studies and determine if these satisfy the approved legislative and policy requirements established for teacher certification in Nova Scotia
  • Evaluate the certification of individual teacher applicants and provide documentation to the Registrar and/or Assistant Registrar in situations where an applicant is not deemed eligible for teacher certification in Nova Scotia
  • Evaluate programs of study for teachers which lead to an increase in classification and provide confirmation of the program approval or denial to the Registrar and/or Assistant Registrar
  • Assess documentation to ensure all requirements for an increase in classification have been successfully completed and make a recommendation for the increase in classification to the Registrar and/or Assistant Registrar
  • Ensure the Governor in Council Regulations, under the Education Act, are adhered to in the assessment and recommendation non-Nova Scotia public school service for salary recognition
  • Provide explanations to teachers whose non-NS public school service cannot be recognized as per the Governor in Council Regulations under the Education Act
  • Respond to a variety of regulatory inquiries from applicants
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications and Experience


To be considered for this opportunity, you hold a bachelor's degree and 1 year of relevant experience or equivalent. Relevant experience may include applying regulations or other legislation to decision-making, analyzing post-secondary transcripts, and/or experience in the public school or post-secondary sector. 

 

You also possess the following:

 

  • Experience working with the public in a customer service-oriented environment
  • Ability to interpret and apply regulations, policies/procedures for the purposes of approving documentation including applications and reports
  • Ability to apply sound judgement and make effective decisions
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively as part of a team
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently with a high degree of initiative
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Post-secondary education in a related field


Experience with international credential assessment is considered an asset. Ability to conduct work in French is considered an asset. 


We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.

Working Conditions

 

Normal work week is 35 hours/week, 7 hours/day.

May be required to work overtime on occasion.

Pay Grade:  PR 06  

Salary Range:  $2,112.87 - $3,029.89 Bi-Weekly
