About Our Opportunity

 

Under the general supervision of the Manager, Provincial Outfits, the Inspector (Specialist) provides expert technical knowledge and skills in the design, construction, and maintenance of electronic/electrical/mechanical systems used in traffic signal, highway lighting, and other specialized control systems throughout the province. The Inspector (Specialist) ensures the quality of components and processes used and is a key player in initiating innovative technologies to further enhance the quality and serviceability of these systems that serve our highway network.

Primary Accountabilities

 

You play a vital role in ensuring quality components and processes are used and are a key player in initiating innovative technologies to enhance the quality and serviceability of the systems that service our provincial road network. You will use your expertise in engineering technologies to:
 
  • Conduct the design, prototyping and completion of specialized control systems and managing inventory of these systems;
  • Conduct inspection, calibration, preventative and emergency system maintenance;
  • Perform bench testing, troubleshooting and repairing of traffic signal and highway lighting equipment;
  • Work with Department’s Traffic and Road Safety Engineering division to develop and enhance the traffic signal control program; and
  • Install special circuitry.

Daily, you will work with a variety of equipment including traffic controllers, traffic radar, cameras, inductive loops, solar technology and microwave vehicle sensors while working with other Department staff to ensure all system components are inventoried and accounted for.

Qualifications and Experience

 

High School, and completion of an Electronics or Electrical Engineering Technology program, along with three (3) years of related experience in traffic signals and street lighting is required. An equivalent combination of education, training and experience will be considered.

Furthermore, you must be eligible for certification by the Society of Certified Technicians and Technologists of Nova Scotia. Travel throughout the province is required, as such, you must have a valid driver license and access to a reliable motor vehicle have a clean driver’s abstract.

You must also demonstrate:
 
  • comprehensive knowledge of electronic control system construction and maintenance;
  • knowledge of specification development and interpretation;
  • an understanding of procurement policies and the development of contract documents;
  • proficiency in mathematics; and
  • familiarity with computers and Microsoft Office Suite.

You are self-motivated and demonstrate initiative to independently seek solutions to detailed technical problems in stressful situations in a highly complex environment. Your attention to detail and ability to exercise a high-level of concentration in your work is of utmost importance.
 
We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.

Equivalency

 

An equivalent combination of relevant training and experience will be considered. Related equivalencies include:

 

  • Five (5) years of related experience

Working Conditions

 

You will travel regularly throughout the province and travel is often in excess of your scheduled hours and under extreme weather conditions.

Additional Information

 

This position is based in the Traffic Control Office located in Miller Lake but requires field work throughout the province.

 

This position requires you to have adequate vision and colour perception to operate safely. In addition, this position involves exposure to extreme climatic conditions, high traffic volumes, and may include aerial hazards.

Pay Grade:  TE 17 - TE 22  

Salary Range:  $1,929.04 - $2,770.60 Bi-Weekly

 

Note: The salary rates shown reflect the new Civil Service Agreement, effective April 1, 2025. Implementation in our HR system will occur on February 5, 2026.  Until then, the current rates will apply.  Employees hired during this period will receive retroactive pay adjustments in accordance with the new agreement and applicable policies.
