The Fleet Services Division of the Department of Public Works is recruiting for a Stockroom Supervisor to join the Fleet Services team. We are located at Miller Lake, the central Fleet Services hub of the province. At Miller Lake, we are pivotal in ensuring the equipment used to maintain, repair, and build Nova Scotia’s 23,000 kilometers of roads and highways, and 4,100 bridges, is always ready to go.

About Our Opportunity

 

Under the general direction of the Manager of Fleet Services, the Stockroom Supervisor is responsible for initiating, coordinating, and procuring stock for the fleet inventory of the Central Mechanical Branch operation at Miller Lake including staff supervision, providing technical advice and support, and advises and collaborates with the Provincial Inventory Coordinator in maintaining sound procedures for the procurement and control of stock flow for all fleet inventories throughout the province.

Primary Accountabilities

 

The Stockroom Supervisor is responsible in determining time, cost, and quantity of stock items to maintain the servicing of the department's fleet within a timely manner while taking into consideration the carrying costs and storage of inventory. The Supervisor will verify changes to minimum and maximum reorder points to achieve optimum inventory stock levels and communicate with parts and supply representatives to ensure best pricing and service from individual vendors.

 

Your main responsibilities will also include:

 

  • Supervises a staff of approximately 10, which includes setting and evaluating staff performance targets, promoting diversity and a healthy workplace, demonstrating leadership competencies, respecting corporate human resources practices, promoting teamwork and individual development, and maintaining internal communications.
  • Establishes realistic short-term or long-term goals, in collaboration with the Provincial Inventory Coordinator for the Central Mechanical Branch stockroom operations at Miller Lake Mechanical Branch and monitoring work to ensure these goals are met and procurement policies and procedures are followed.
  • Reviews the Materials Resource Planning module to determine items required for the Central Mechanical Branch stockroom operations at Miller Lake inventory and initiates requisitions and orders to replenish the inventory. This includes ensuring that the procurement of materials is managed through the SAP Materials Management Module.
  • Responsible for preparing, initiating, managing, and collecting provincial surveys for all divisions pertaining to the procurement of winter material.
  • Confers with fleet personnel in establishing specifications for stock parts. Also confers with the procurement agency for updates to contracts and methods of procuring materials.
  • Collaborates with the Provincial Inventory Coordinator in determining type and classification of inventory so that meaningful control systems are established and maintained, as well as promoting the co-ordination and communication within the department on equipment purchases, disposals, and parts records. Builds efficiency in the stockroom and warehouse by evaluating stock levels: dead stock, slow moving stock, and obsolete stock to optimize inventory levels.

Qualifications and Experience

 

High School completion and post‐secondary training related to the position with 7 years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience may be acceptable.

 

Experience in managing and directing a computerized heavy parts inventory. Knowledge of inventory management applications and principles of inventory management in an automated and integrated environment with this application relating to the procedures within mechanical repair plants.

 

An excellent knowledge of the SAP Inventory Management system with respect to Goods Movement, Material Master, Material Requirements Planning, and Physical Inventory Counts. A working knowledge of the Nova Scotia Occupational Health and Safety Act, Movement of Dangerous Goods, and WHIMIS. Knowledge of the Provincial Government’s purchasing principles and procedures.

Working Conditions

 

Work is performed in a mechanical repair environment occasioned by noise, smoke and gas fumes and, at times, adverse weather conditions while operating in a field environment.

Additional Information

 

This is a Term employment opportunity with an anticipated end date August 30, 2027. The appointment status (Term, Temporary or Casual) is dependent on the start date of the successful candidate.

Pay Grade:  TE 23  

Salary Range:  $2,446.71 - $2,887.20 Bi-Weekly

 

Note: The salary rates shown reflect the new Civil Service Agreement, effective April 1, 2025. Implementation in our HR system will occur on February 5, 2026.  Until then, the current rates will apply.  Employees hired during this period will receive retroactive pay adjustments in accordance with the new agreement and applicable policies.
