Help Shape Public Policy in Nova Scotia

Policy work helps government make better decisions. It turns research, evidence, public needs, operational realities, legislation, data and stakeholder perspectives into clear advice and practical next steps.

Across the Government of Nova Scotia, policy professionals work on issues that affect people, communities, programs, services and systems. Some roles focus on research and analysis. Others focus on legislation, regulations, Cabinet submissions, program policy, corporate reporting, data, service delivery, stakeholder engagement evaluation or implementation planning.

This Future Opportunity Stream offers a one-application pathway to be considered for future policy opportunities across government.

What this Future Opportunity Stream Is

This is not a posting for one specific vacancy.

By applying to this stream, you are expressing interest in being considered for future policy work opportunities across the Government of Nova Scotia.

Opportunities may vary by department, job classification, union status, location, level of responsibility, and area of policy work. These will include bargaining unit (unionized) policy roles as well as excluded classification (non-unionized) positions.  Positions could be Permanent, Term or Temporary.

Being part of this stream does not guarantee an interview or job offer. Candidates must still meet the qualifications and assessment requirements for each specific opportunity.

Why Apply to This Stream

This stream makes it easier to be considered for future policy roles across the Government of Nova Scotia.

Instead of applying separately every time a policy vacancy becomes available, you can submit one application and complete one Policy Candidate Profile. Talent Acquisition may then use your information to consider you for multiple future opportunities where your background appears to be a strong fit.

This helps us better understand not only whether you have policy experience, but what kind of policy work you have done, what products you have worked on, how much responsibility you carried and which roles may be a strong fit.

How it Works

To be considered through this stream, you must complete both:

  1. the online application, including your resume and required information
  2. the Policy Candidate Profile questionnaire

The Policy Candidate Questionnaire is required, and the link will be emailed to you within 14 days of us receiving your application. This information helps Talent Acquisition understand your preferences and experience in more detail, along with reviewing your application, resume and cover letter.

As vacancies arise, Talent Acquisition may review candidates in the stream and identify those whose application and Policy Candidate Profile appear to align with a specific role.

If you are identified as a potential match, Talent Acquisition will contact you before your application is forwarded for review. You will be provided with a description of the specific job opportunity and will have the chance to confirm whether you are still interested in being considered.

Policy Analyst & Senior Policy Analyst Roles

This stream will support Policy Analyst and Senior Policy Analyst opportunities across government.

Policy Analyst roles may involve research and analysis, drafting, coordination and reporting, program or service delivery policy, legislative or regulatory support, stakeholder engagement and the preparation of advice, recommendations or briefing materials.

Senior Policy Analyst roles generally involve greater independence and responsibility for more complex files, including developing strategic advice and recommendations and working with senior leaders, decision-makers, partners and colleagues across government.

The exact duties, classification, union status, qualifications and assessment requirements will vary by opportunity. Role-specific details will be provided if you are considered for a particular opportunity through this stream.

Qualifications

Specific qualifications vary between each unique role.

Policy Analyst and Senior Policy Analyst positions may have different requirements based on the classification, department, level of responsibility and nature of the work. Some roles, including bargaining unit positions, may have defined requirements related to education, training and years of related experience.

If you are considered for a specific opportunity, your application will be reviewed against the qualifications and assessment requirements for that role.

We are looking for candidates with education, training and/or experience related to policy, research, analysis, program development, evaluation, legislation, regulation, corporate reporting, data analysis, stakeholder engagement, service delivery or decision support.

Equivalent combinations of training, education, and experience may be considered where applicable. This means you may still be considered if you do not meet the exact education path listed for a specific role, but you have a related mix of education, courses, professional training and practical experience that demonstrates the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Candidates relying on equivalencies must clearly demonstrate in their application how their education and/or experience meets the requirements of the role.
